Target groups

Enterprises involved with genetic selection
With future possibilities in mind, breeding enterprises take tissue and blood samples from selected individuals in their testing systems. At present these are samples which are used in different research projects, but with more knowledge of genetics and how genes work, the goal is that these samples can be used in connection with future work done on selective breeding.

Preserving genetic diversity / Government administration
A biobank is a repository for genetic information, and can therefore be used to preserve biological samples of threatened species or species of general interest. By systematically storing embryos, milk, sperm and egg cells, seeds or DNA from threatened strains, species and races, important information which might otherwise be lost is preserved. This will be done in collaboration with the administrative bodies which have public responsibility for this work.

Research and development enterprises
By collecting biological samples from individuals who represent different groups of characteristics such as:

  • sick/healthy
  • high/low productivity of livestock
  • resistance to infections and pests, etc.
we will be able to understand which varieties of a gene have a specific effect on a particular characteristic. Biobanks will therefore become extremely important resources for enterprises and research institutions involved in genetic research.

Genetic traceability
We have arrived at the stage where the possibility to trace the origin of the food we eat and what has been done to it along the way is becoming increasingly important. The platforms on which BioBank AS is built will serve as a natural starting point for work done on establishing such traceability systems and can be developed even further so as to become integral elements in future work on traceability systems.
